Einde project Play BKR Eindhoven. Next level?

discussie in depot

Discussie in depot

Government programs to support the arts#4: Sweden

The cultural heritage of Sweden constitutes a balanced combination of the Swedish sensibility and of influences from foreign larger cultures, like the German and the French traditions.[1] Such a strong foreign cultural factor has not surprisingly led to the fact that “Swedish cultural policy began with the defence of national identity.”[2] The Crown and the court’s desire to have a more sophisticated cultural establishment became the second cultural motor, and social movements were the third cultural motor with an aim to make cultural life accessible to everyone. The energy of these heterogeneous forces drove the country to reconsidering the importance of the cultural sector in the twentieth century. Nationalist, elitist or popular, these agents’ legacy motivated the care-taking of Swedish cultural life, and therefore its artists.

Government programs to support the arts#3: The German experience

Germany

German cultural policy has historically been greatly heterogeneous. The several independent feudal states and city republics had in the nineteenth century a rich and self-managed cultural life. Under the Weimar Republic (1919-1933), the competences on culture were divided among four government instances’ levels. The National Socialist regime (1933-1945) replaced this system for a highly centralized one. After the WWII, Germany splitted in two and adopted dramatically opposed government systems, being culture Western and elitist, under a centralized rule in West Germany, while being Soviet and popular under a centralist rule in East Germany. What remains nowadays at the cultural level is the result of this convulsive national history, between centralization and federalization, elitist and popular, with still a great attention devoted to art.

Hugo de Jong is the lucky art lover who got Jan Goossen’s sculpture “Ontmoeting” on loan. As you can see in the picture exemplified by the two paintings that hang above Hugo, he is a passioned young art collector. His appartment is a real contemporary art museum with paintings and photographs everywhere. So “Ontmoeting” could not be in a better place, well yes, in De Krabbedans on display since this Friday 8th in the “Uit de doeken” exhibition.
